Before I get into any generalities in my review, I have something specific to say. While history may well become myth and legend before fading from the memory, myth has no place in a book purporting to be about history.

Therefore, the final two essays (Yeti and Loch Ness Monster) really annoyed me. I have no problem with either mythical creature even enjoy some of the reading material that is out there on the subjects. HOWEVER, neither creature is history. If Platnick really wanted to write about them, he needed to write another book.Moving on…Sometimes this book was silly, sometimes serious, and rarely truly historic. Before I read this book I wondered why I found it in generalities instead of history.

Now I know. When I was writing my senior thesis before I got my BA, I had to write a 15 page paper with multiple proposals, the ideas that I found interesting, and would like to write about. From there I was to look for source material and what I could argue. This book read something like a less professional version of that paper. If I were required to write a paper on a mystery in history, this would be a good starting point, but in no way could it be source material.Overall, not terrible, but not a good way to start the nonfiction part of my project.

I selected this book out of the four that I brought home because it was short (a good thing when trying to read as much as fast as I have to complete my project) and it seemed interesting. I assumed I would go on to read and perhaps even review the other books I brought home that day. I wish I had decided to start with a different one of those books. This review is taken from my blog
